The Alarki Clan (Pik Alarku), c.b. Vic Smith

A legendary clan that owes its existence--and impending doom--to the same cursed artifact.

The Sword of Alarka (Vaskul Alarku, "The Sword of Unmaking") was used by the clan's founder to create a labyrinth of trees and illusions against pursuers.

The Alarki live in woodlands, and give fealty to whomever holds the Sword. This Swordbearer is chief until another kills him and takes the sword. No cheek rank scars are used in this clan, except by the Swordbearer/chief.
Notes for Fan Storytelling
Baron Munchhausen (Strowlers)
* the man who would become Baron von Münchhausen was born under a different name into a family of strowlers who made their money by playing at market all over the region that would become Germany
** let's call him Bernd for now
** his conception should have some magical element (maybe he has fae blood)
* one day they played in Munchausen and caught the eye of the then Baron of Munchhausen
** he liked the performance Bernd was putting on so much that he made him his court jester
* the baron was impotent (or maybe asexual) and hence didn't have any children
** but he needed an heir if he didn't want the province to fall into the wrong hands
** over the years he had developed a close relationship with his court jester
** so the idea came to him to make the court jester his heir
*** needs some more developing as to how this could happen. seems unplausible that the jester disappeared and re-appeared as a lost son without anyone putting 2 and 2 together... IDEA: Bernd wasn't the court jester. Instead the baron had the idea to find someone to be his "lost son" and travelled the country to find someone who wasn't noble and a talented enough actor to play the part. reason: The baron couldn't stand the aristocracy and wanted to play the ultimate joke on them.
* so Bernd became the new Baron
* He only told close friends about his "magical background"
** However, one day his right hand man told this story during a night drinking with friends
** The Baron didn't want other people to find out about the magic in the world, so he began to tell tall tales in order to discredit the (true) account of his birth
** The tales he came up with didn't contain any magical elements in order to prevent unnecessary attention for the magical folk
* Future scholars noted that all of the Baron's tales took place in heightened versions of our reality - except for the story of his birth.
** But the dominant theory for this is that the birth story was invented by someone other than the Baron who was lost to history.
** Only very few (who are laughed at by the rest of the scientic community) believe that the birth story is the only true tale that the Baron ever told.
Problem: Magic is common place in the Strowlers universe. The above outline fits better into a Harry Potter (or Artemis Fowl) style world where magic is secret.
The history of R9E, as it is commonly called, is as improbable as its ongoing storyline. R9E actually started in 1982 as a homebrew role-playing campaign held at various small conventions within driving distance of the designers’ home town of Toad Suck, Arkansas, in which the results of each adventure pointed the scenario designers to create a new adventure based on the old.

In 1989, when one of the designers moved to Charleston, West Virginia, and continued to use the scenarios in other conventions, they had to assimilate the results of the players’ accomplishments in both states, creating what became the first Evolving Storyline Convention Adventure. These ESCAs rapidly spread among small conventions across North America and even overseas to Norway.

Things “ESCA-lated” in 1996, when a wealthy raisin farmer from Fresno became enamored of the ESCA concept, and teamed up with the original designers to create an Evolving Storyline Cardgame Adventure based on the groundwork laid over the previous fourteen years. The first R9E cards were released two years later. At first they were tarot-sized, but later switched to the standard Magic card size. The first R9E World Championship tournament was held the same year. Although R9E had started as a basic medieval fantasy, tournament players had an unprecedented amount of control over the story development, which included such salient events as the arrival of the extraplanar Ord, and the temporal displacement of an entire US military division from 1945 Los Alamos.

The game also survived some questionable decisions made when the entire staff but the accountant came down with the stomach flu at the World Championships. These include the notorious “partial keyword ruling,” which stated that anything that targeted an orc could also target a sorcerer card; and the “card ownership ruling,” which ended up banning borrowed cards and decks from tournaments until it was overturned in 2002.

The US Nationals 2007 was a Romance of the Nine Empires tournament held at the Origins Game Fair, July 5-8, 2007, in Columbus, OH. Although ordinarily held at GenCon in Indianapolis, IN, Romance of the Nine Empires tournaments were subject to a one year ban by GenCon, LLC, following the so-called "Unseelie Streak" incident at GenCon 2006. Tournament organizers were able to secure the new location for the US Nationals. US Nationals for R9E resumed at GenCon in 2008.

The 2007 Nationals became infamous for the Rules Team's quick action in issuing bans and errata for several cards on Friday evening of the game fair, between the Qualifiers and the Main Event, in what is now known as the "Pogrom of the Glorious Bastards".

The winning deck of this tournament, a Merchants of Esh "Super-Fiends" deck using superior economy to bring out the most powerful monsters in the game, was released in a special foil and tarot-sized version to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Romance of the Nine Empires.

The Pogrom of the Glorious Bastards was an incident at the 2007 R9E US Nationals. It lives in game lore infamy due to two factors: the degeneracy of the game environment being exploited by a large playgroup, and the mid-tournament decision by the R9E Rules Team to issue bans and errata for several cards between the Qualifiers and the Main Event.

Thursday's Qualifier tournament suffered a mass incursion by the so-called "Windy City Wrecking Crew" (WCWC) playgroup, each of whom were piloting a degenerate Holden deck (nicknamed "Gossip Girl") that drew, played, and re-shuffled its deck several times before the end of the second turn, rocketing to a popular victory via the completion of multiple high-renown quests. Every single member of the WCWC who played the deck on Thursday -- 17 in all -- were among the top 32 players who advanced to the Saturday Main Event.

Gossip Girl relied on a number of rare and promotional cards that were difficult for players to obtain, as well as a very narrow reading on a timing ruling that had been submitted for approval to the Rules Team, privately, in advance. It was rumored that the Wrecking Crew's "quartermaster" -- who had made a small fortune in the secondary card market for R9E -- had cornered the market on the key pieces of the deck. When the entire playgroup used the deck to advance, several hopefuls scrambled to recreate the deck from various cobbled-together scouting reports and play anecdotes. Unfortunately, due to the card ownership ruling, which would not be overturned for two years, only a handful of players were able to approximate the carefully-guarded decklist from cards they had on hand at the convention.

Still, the power of the deck was such that even the imitators fared well in the Friday qualifier. Amidst a near-mob of angry players, and fearing another convention ban, the Rules Team issued a grand total of 13 errata and bans to cards involved in the degeneracy of Gossip Girl on Friday night. Faced with needing to scrape together new decks in a hurry, the Wrecking Crew would not fare as well on Saturday, sending only two of its number to the top 32.

Although none of the WCWC won the Nationals, their efforts to break the game would be commemorated by the cohort card "Glorious Bastards," a card that mimicked one of the degenerate card draw mechanics, but at a greater cost. The card name came from the combination of the rapid popular victory with the most common epithet used to describe the playgroup.

The Nine Empires Invitational of 2001 was one of the most controversial as a small group of veteran players specifically targeted the previous years regional winners in order to qualify for this event. This strategy normally wouldn't work, however, due to the number of these players who were able to make it to nationals, the group won by sheer numbers and brute force. The end result being the introduction of the alien race The Ord into game canon.
Romance of the Nine Empires US Nationals 2007
2018-12-30T18:51:38Z

Moritz.schubert.pb: copy and pasted and slightly rearranged from http://r9e.wikia.com/wiki/US_Nationals_2007

Argus Hammerdoom

Argus Hammerdoom is the seconf son of King Hammerdoom.

History
Argus Hammerdoom is as fiery as his bright red hair and beard. A sportsman and a powerful warrior, Argus has always excelled at outdoor pursuits and feats of strength, so much so that many think him an unintelligent brute. This behavior has increased noticeably since Argus has come of age, and the Traditionalists have begun trying to convince him to push for the title of Crown Prince, an honor which can be bestowed upon any the King chooses, regardless of lineage or birth order.

Many close to Argus doubt he will ever challenge Prince Rannon, however, since Argus has been Rannon's most trusted friend since childhood. Argus, himself, claims to not want the extra responsibility of Crown Prince and so far has been willing to support his brother's every decision.
The Tuatha

The Tuatha is one of the nine empires vying for the control over Countermay

History
Ixhasa may be the oldest civilization, but the oldest people—if you can call them that—are undoubtedly the Tuatha. Hailing from beyond the Veil in the Mirror World that lies parallel to Countermay, the Tuatha are not a homogenous group but a collection of the ageless fae—fairies in the vulgar tongue—noble and cruel, beautiful and monstrous. Powered by their glamours and ability to slip beyond the Veil at will, the curious and mischievous Tuatha visited Countermay for their own purposes and found a life in local legend.

It wasn’t until the Collapse of the Veil, with their ability to vanish lost, that the Tuatha found themselves forced to interact with the other empires and form a state. Though the Veil has since been restored, the trade and diplomatic bonds the Tuatha formed in the interim have had an indelible impact on their culture, one that escalated a longstanding internal schism into a full-blown civil war.

The Seelie—the noble Sidhe and nymphs, helpful brownies and the like—found the mortal empires and their frailties and potential fascinating, and advocated for ongoing interaction with them. But their opponents, the Unseelie—the dark elves, the ravenous goblins, treacherous changelings and hags—saw weak peoples fit only for exploitation and enslavement. During the War of the God-King, Tuatha Dundareel helped Simm Buxtahude to forge an alliance to prevent The Cult of Shad-Hujem from reaching The God Head Seat. A prince of the Seelie Tuatha, Dundareel committed his forces to help trick the God-King into committing his own. Believing the innate magic of the Seelie would protect them from the effects of The Displaced's bomb, the Seelie made up the majority of the force used to draw in the Hujem.

While the bomb was successful in killing Shad-Hujem and breaking his army, it had unexpected effects on many of the Seelie. While some like Dundareel were able to recover from the radiation poisoning, many more perished after a long wasting sickness. This gave the Unseelie Tuatha the advantage they needed to overthrow the Seelie, killing many members of the royal family, except Dundareel, who managed to escape using his magic. The resulting war was fought on both sides of the Veil. In the end, the Unseelie triumphed. They exiled the princes of the Sidhe to Countermay. The Tuatha today are an unstable and unpredictable foe, chaotic and mercurial and honestly best avoided.
