Hello all! I first experienced The Gamers on Youtube at 240p in the mid-2000s. Now, I'm super into Hands of Fate and Countermay.

I cleaned up the R9E Wikia/Fandom.com wiki (the one created to add a mythic history to Romance of the Nine Empires in 2013) with lots of sources and stuff in 2019 and was pointed here from the ZOE Discord (I'm random-allium-table there) by User:Moritz.schubert.pb. My wiki passion is in citations and internal hyperlinks. Hope to talk to you soon!

Articles to Create
* Ulix of Ixhasa, the Eternal Emperor
* Salia the Slaughterer - https://www.instagram.com/p/ob2WqpQD-7/
* The Stonebrier orcish clan inhabit the Thornwild Hills. The hills are cold and muddy. they're rainy, hard to farm, rocky fields, rough for horses & wagons.
* Void Jumpers

R9E Fandom.com Wikia: Origins
The old Wikia was created by a professional creative team to promote the movie and game (confirmed by the ZOE team in a Youtube comment). Most of the content on the old Wikia can be traced back to faction descriptions in the AEG card game manual. However, there's a peculiar amount of content that doesn't seem to come from anywhere outside of the Wikia. Here are my most recent notes trying to squeeze every last bit of lore out of the remains of that project, trying to parse out what was written by the professionals and what was fanon.

Bread Crumbs: The Search for Elbeth
Here's where my latest search started. There is no mention of Elbeth in official ZOE releases as far as I know, so I went looking for where she came from. If she's a fan creation whole cloth, there's reason to delete her article. However, there is another mention of Elbeth on the internet: a Fantasy AGE homebrew item credited to Ajay Pollarine. The R9E Wikia article on Elbeth was created by shadesofkin (likely also Ajay) and Utherseth73 (likely this ZOE fan). Also, the Wikia article content was mostly added in June 2013, before any public HoF screenings. Were they jumping in on the online promotional campaign (which started in Jan. 2013 and picked up speed in May) as fans or were they brought in as part of the promotional team officially?

This got me going...

More Digging
In the storyline AEG created to give the real R9E card game a sense of history, they pretended that a database of R9E info had "crashed," the backups "fried," losing all R9E information---their blog post sharing this story is archived and available. A "replacement" Wikia was created in early June 2013 by a small number of accounts:
<ul>
<li>Utherseth73 (164 edits, mostly adding images and dumping faction descriptions from the AEG rulebook, which had been released in May)
<li>Roborangutang(48 edits, mostly wiki maintenance and admin duties)
<li>Otteriffic(46 edits, mostly adding images and a fictional story about Ord players)
<li>MKgorgone(11 edits, dumping a large amount of Shad-Hujem lore. UPDATE: I reached out to a Twitter account by the same name in June 2020, and they confirmed it was fan fiction.)
<li>Shadesofkin(3 edits, all to the Elbeth article)
<li>Shad-O-Facts(3 edits, all to fictional tournament info)
<li>Ordislife(1 edit, adding a category to the Ord article)
</ul>
Activity didn't pick up again until Oct. 2013, after HoF was already released. This is reason to believe that content posted to the Wikia in June 2013 might have come from a promotional team, rather than AEG or ZOE fans. Roborangutang posted in kayfabe that the old Wikia was "the rebirth of the [R9E] wiki," but there was no way to know whether they were a pro or just an altruistic fan...

Then I found this bombshell conversation. Roborangutang was in familiar contact with AEG! If no one else, we know they were coordinating with pros if they weren't a pro themselves.

Who was Rhea?
Suddenly, in mid-Oct. 2013, a newcomer leapt onto the scene. Rhea Flint is a fully kayfabe account, from the profile to a couple comments they left. This account is in-character as if the game's history is real, and while most of their contributions were formatting edits for readability, they added seemingly original content to various pages. Less than two weeks later, their R9E Wikia activity stopped. They included a link on their profile to an R9E RPG campaign at Obsidian Portal that includes some Countermay lore not hosted anywhere else, and it seems that's where they took their creative activity.

UPDATE (7/2020): I reached out to their Obsidian Portal account in June 2020, and they've confirmed it was fan fiction.

Biography
Under Buxtehude's leadership, Holden grew from a refugee to a city, and eventually a nation recognized in the Circle of Nine.

In the War of the God-King, Buxtehude forged an alliance between Arcanix, The Displaced, Holden, Malchior, the Ord, and the Seelie Tuatha against God-King Shad-Hujem's cult and their allies in the Esh and the Unseelie Tuatha. Alongside Seelie prince Dundareel, Buxtehude tricked the God-King to commit his forces, allowing their own forces to sneak the Displaced's city-killing bomb into the God-King's presence and vaporize the dark one and bury the Godhead Seat.

Shortly thereafter, Buxtehude developed symptoms of a mysterious wasting disease known to the Displaced as "radiation poisoning." Before his death, he crowned Genevieve as queen of Holden and convinced the established factions of Countermay to recognize Holden as their equal.
No other clan terrifies the dwarves as much as the Earthmantle, for no other clan can strike them in their homes.

In order to hasten their expansions after the age of legends, dwarven geomancers identified orcs with talent and bred them to create the ancestors of the Earthmantle. When the orcs rebelled during the Red Exodus, the Underkings sent an army do kill all the Earthmantle orcs, who they feared above all others. The Earthmantle escaped North and up, collapsing tunnels, until they broke through the roof of the Blue Mountain. In a stroke of revenge, the surviving Earthmantle brought down an entire mountain, irrevocably crushing the Dwarven city of Copperdeep.

"The sky is mine!" --Earthmantle warcry

Dwarves kill all Earthmantle on sight, and have even hired other (unscrupulous) orcs to attempt Earthmantle slaughter, so Earthmantle members are extremely wary of any outsiders, orc or not. They live in rocky foothills as farmers and geomancers, in seamless fortresses, and many are afflicted with claustrophobia from generations of being "mantled in earth."
The Blueskins, (Laeladhaeaz), c.b.Justin Esparza

The Blueskins long to return to the glory days of the Ord, rediscover the secrets of technomancy, and perhaps, one day, rejoin their ancestors among the stars.

During the Red Exodus, the ancestors of the Blueskins travelled as far northwest as they could possibly go and settled there. Over several generations, they have become more ordic. Their lifespans increased, their need to hibernate shortened from 2 months to 2-3 weeks, and the chlorophyll in their skin thinned until many are blue or teal.

The Blueskins are ruled by a council of eight: four orcs and four orcmaids. Those on the council are usually the most blue-skinned. Despite the general distaste for blue-skinned orcs (see the Astral Voyagers), Blueskins are appreciated among other clans and hired as denwatchers.

Some Blueskins have rudimentary technomancy abilities.
During hibernation, the Forest Clan doesn't need denwatchers. They burrow near trees, intertwine their fingers, and are protected by the forest while they sleep.
The clan's denwatchers are called graybeards. They hum a tune throughout winter causing anyone who enters the territory to grow sleepier until they fall asleep.

History
Countermay
* The arcanoquake from Ulix's attempt to tap into a Nexus tore a hole between worlds and exposed the Undermarket. "Since the discovery of the Undermarket, Esh has ballooned into a sprawling mercantile metropolis ruled by an oligarchy of trade princes—men most able or willing to barter with the entities in the Undermarket."
* After the Denizaal conquered Countermay's Veil world, the Pex sold legal rights to that realm to the Undermarketeers in exchange for passage to a new world, which is how they ended up under The Shadow's abandoned Dracospine fortress in Fartherall.

Fartherall
Sixth Age
* On their way through the Undermarket, the Pex stole certain treasures they later used to barter respect in Fartherall, along with advanced arcanophagic weapons and firearms used to force the human and dwarf forces out of the Dracospine fortress. The Pex maintained a monopoly on Undermarket connections in Fartherall, and their access to arcanophagic weaponry would later define their place in Fartherall and lead to the spark that began the Centuries War between the United Powers and the Free Nations Mutual Defense Pact.
* Denizaal warriors were often hired as mercenaries through the Undermarket.
* Cedric Humm, a human bard from Countermay, was a terrible kazooist who arrived in Fartherall after getting lost in—and later expelled from—the Undermarket.
* The Undermarketeers left Fartherall in 1746, when the Dream Bells shattered following the removal of the Godsword Aion from the tomb of Yir, the First God, located on the moon.

Seventh Age
* As part of the Lonely Tower Accord that ended the Centuries War, the United Powers required the Pex seal the cleft to the Undermarket below the Pex capitol Prosperity and return the land to the dwarves. The dwarves, not knowing the connection to the Undermarket was long gone, had hoped to gain ties to the Marketeers and were furious at the alleged deception, but the Pex won in court.
* Around the year 1901 (the beginning of Underking Lum's rule and the founding of the Dwarven Imperium), the dwarves uncovered the Undermarket again, deep in the mountain.

Eighth Age
* The Dwarven Imperium dropped an archanophagic city-killing bomb (CKB) bought from the Undermarket on the Rimic capital Cryopolis.

The Merchants of Esh are one of the nine empires vying for the control over Countermay. "Esh has no standing army, but has never needed one; mercenaries, from this world and others, are far more cost effective. The other empires consider Esh an immoral den of obscene wealth, ruled by barely human individuals only interested in increasing their own fortunes. Which is true. But Esh is also the only place certain materials can be found, so when push comes to shove, they grit their teeth and pay the price."

History
"The other city-state to emerge from the aftermath of Ixhasa’s fall, Esh was founded for purposes far less noble than Arcanix. It began as a trade hub due to its strategic location, a minor city of no special distinction. It wouldn’t become a power until a residual aftershock from the corrupted Nexus that sank Ixhasa tore open more than the ground beneath the fledgling city. The arcanoquake tore open the tissue between worlds, exposing what the Eshene have come to call the Undermarket."

"Since the discovery of the Undermarket, Esh has ballooned into a sprawling mercantile metropolis ruled by an oligarchy of trade princes—men most able or willing to barter with the entities in the Undermarket."
Arrival in Countermay
The Tuatha are very secretive about their people's history. According to sources in Countermay, the Tuatha originally came "from beyond the Veil in the Mirror World that lies parallel to Countermay. Powered by their glamours and ability to slip beyond the Veil at will, the curious and mischievous Tuatha visited Countermay for their own purposes and found a life in local legend. It wasn’t until the Collapse of the Veil, with their ability to vanish lost, that the Tuatha found themselves forced to interact with the other empires and form a state." However, according to sources in Fartherall, the Tuatha were the first people of Countermay.

In the Second Age, the Elder Races (Olom, Ald, and Ord) attempted with an Apple of Life to bring Death back from the dead to aid them in their war against the Wymhorde. However, the apple they retrieved was rotten, and she arose as the first undead. Displeased with the lifeforms created by the third generation of deities, she turned the children of Olom against the Elder Races.

In the Third Age, Death appeared to Colaebrian, the Emperor of Archaiad, as the Pale Lady while he was in a coma and sang to him the text of a powerful spell that became the sentient Oclysma, whose movements brought the end of that age.
In the Fourth Age, Death appeared as the Pale Lady, a goddess who walks the earth. When Carrow becomes undead, she attempts to recruit him as her disciple but is constantly rebuffed.

In JQS2, she exposes Wren as alive to her hoard of undead, overriding Wren's Veil of Death Potion. She also waves at Silver Tom. Silver Tom is real weird about that.

In JQS3, she offers her icon to Carrow, and at the end of the season, tries to speak with Perf.

The Olom were the First Race, created by the third generation of the gods of Fartherall. They had a strong mesomorphic build and continued to grow throughout their lives. Their children became the giant, ogre, dwarf, human, and halfling races.

History
The First Age: The Age of Dreams
The third generation of gods creates the Olom and makes them stewards of the world. The powerful Olom build a society and dwell in worshipful harmony upon Fartherall.

The Second Age: The Age of Wonder
The Ord appear in their flying vessels, and the Ald emerge from the First Wood. These Elder Races of Fartherall build thriving civilizations and live in general peace with one another. The Elder Races grow complacent, and the Olom especially ignore their worship of the gods.

The Wyrmbroods attack the Olom. Outmatched, outnumbered, and unprepared for war, the Olom make a drastic decision. Trading their offspring’s mortality for focus, the Olom segment their children into five mortal echelons—rulers, warriors, builders, servants, and gardeners—and send them into war against the dragons. The three Elder Races unite against the Heirs of the Draagan. War blankets the world.

After the Elder Races fail to bring Death back to life, she whispers to the mortal children of the Olom and turns them against their parents. The alliance of the Elder Races shatters. The Wyrmbroods annihilate the Olom, driving them to extinction. With their progenitor race gone, the Children of the Olom settle into their roles and branch into the Olom legacy races: the giants, ogres, dwarves, humans, and halflings.

JQS1: Wren Birdsong has been following the party (Perf, Nara, Carrow, and Glorion) for a year after receiving her assignment from the Headmistress of the Bard's college. Wren notices Rilk and his comrade carve an orcsign and accidentally shouts "sod", which alerts the orcs and Nara. Wren hides behind the riddle pillar, barely out of view of the party.

The Assassin confronts Wren at knife point and demands Wren explain herself. Wren is talkative, so the Assassin soon knocks her out and ties her up. When Wren wakes, Carrow (now undead) shambles across her path toward the orc encampment. Nara impales an orc with a thrown knife, and the now dead orc lands near Wren. Wren uses the knife to free herself.

She still thinks that she's been assigned a false epic until Rilk, Grellnock, and Yart inform her that Perf had the Sword of Fighting.

JQS2: While following Carrow, Perf, Nara, and their captor (the Assassin) into Sumber, Wren uses a Veil of Death to avoid notice by the undead inhabitants of the city. The Pale Lady removes the veil and reveals Wren as alive. The undead swarm Wren, and she drops a potion of intangibility, but eats the dirt where it landed to escape the hoard and enter the mausoleum.

Inside the mausoleum, Silver Tom catches up with Wren. He surreptitiously steals her badge and tries to take her notes, but she refuses to hand them over. Rilk appears, having assumed Wren was in danger, and Silver Tom accuses Wren of breaking a tenet via Romantic Entanglement. The corpse worm attacks Rilk, and Wren picks up a sword to stab it while Silver Tom takes her notebook and runs.

Outside the mausoleum, Wren tries to convince Silver Tom not to take her epic, to no avail. Rilk appears and speaks in orcish, which Wren can't understand. She does confirm she's got a major crush on the Sergeant, even without knowing his name.

The Assassin steals Wren's clothes. Rude.

JQS3: With only her cloak as a covering, Wren stomps through the woods, and encounters a vessel of the Wicked Kings, barely alive. Wren listens and learns of the plot to kill Perf. When the Kings notice the orb is on, Wren runs, trips, and falls on her potions bag. The potions mix, and she begins to wildly hallucinate. Puppets are involved. She passes out near a Dwarven mining village and is taken in by Miad and Daggie. Daggie requires her to sing for her supper in the tavern. Wren starts to sing, but when Perf appears in the tavern, she hides.

Wren informs Silver Tom of the Kings' plot to kill Perf. Silver Tom is unmoved. Miad and Wren talk about the stolen epic and Wren's urge to save her protagonist, and Miad suggests Wren write a rogue epic. Wren sings in the tavern, a personal song about her journey to becoming a bard. Wren's Song

"...Listen to the Talking Heads." --Wren's mom, apparently.

After her song, Wren gushes with Miad and speaks to Rilk (disguised). Wren struggles with Silver Tom while recording the interaction between Perf, Nara, the Assassin, and soon Daggie and Miad. She throws Silver Tom's hat toward the fight, and both Wren and Silver Tom react in horror as Carrow bites the Assassin's neck. Wren and Silver Tom return to the tavern, Wren asks for her notebook back. Rilk, Yart, Grellnock, Glorion, and Roderick enter shortly afterward, so they hide in the wardrobe-closet. Rilk, Yart, and Grellnock enter the closet too, and Wren starts scolding Rilk. After Yart and Grellnock disappear, Wren sleep-potions Silver Tom, dresses herself and Rilk in frilly clothes, and sneaks past Glorion. Wren and Rilk argue in the woods and decide to travel together to see her party at the Oracle.

Wren meets the Oracle, takes the pinapple tart, and asks her first two questions in quick succession. Wren takes a logical route to phrase her third question carefully.

See Wren's Questions and their answers on the Oracle's page.

Wren leaves the Oracle, takes a pineapple tart to Rilk, kisses him, and then Rilk passes out.

(Stop sleep-potioning people, Wren. It's rude.)

Wren arrives just after Glorion stabbed Perf. Roderick tries to comfort Wren with an "I'm sure he'll be fine." Since Perf's friends (Nara and Carrow) can't help, Wren gives Perf a healing potion, breaking another tenet.
The Cult of Shad-Hujem is one of the nine empires vying for control over Countermay.

History
"Before the God-King appeared, the Hujem were but a loose nation of uncivilized raiders making war on one another. Then He came, and brought truth. Then He came, and brought purpose. The dark God-King Shad-Hujem burst into the world in fire and pain, searing the eyes from the heads of those who witnessed His arrival. He came to conquer, and found the Hujem only too willing to bend the knee. Almost overnight, the Hujem were transformed into what they are today: A religious empire of warrior-priests and anti-paladins bent on converting the world, by the Word or by the Sword. Fueled by an unmatched religious fervor, their empire grew faster than any before it, and a generation ago stood poised to fulfill Shad-Hujem’s commandment to convert all of Countermay. It was only the unlikely arrival of the Displaced—who have since become their bitterest of rivals—that blunted their advance. In the worldwide war that followed, the Hujem and their allies in Esh and the Unseelie seemed destined for victory before the Displaced vaporized the God-King with their final city-killing bomb.
